Attention Deficit Disorder: Prescription Drug Side Effects in Children

When Attention Deficit Disorder is left untreated, social development issues can frequently arise in children, and adults experience backlash from their affected behavior patterns. While various approaches to treatment are available for both children and adults, the issue of prescription drugs has become a hot topic regarding children, since many parents these days are not anxious to give prescription drugs to their children.

Many parents weigh the pros and cons associated with ADD treatment for younger individuals. Unfortunately, although some symptoms are decreased, the side effects are sometimes worse than the disorder. This is why finding the appropriate remedy (on an individual basis) is important for achieving treatment success.

Since most diagnosed cases of Attention Deficit Disorder occur during childhood, it is important to pay attention to medication side effects in children. The choices and treatment methods chosen for them today can adversely affect their future success as a functioning adult.

A high amount of controversy is connected to the chemical and drug approach to controlling Attention Deficit Disorder in children. There is also concern that hasty diagnoses for children are becoming more and more of an epidemic. Since the side effects of many medicinal treatments for the disorder bring about a host of additional problems, numerous parents are constantly searching for alternatives.

Psychostimulants are commonly used to treat children with Attention Deficit Disorder. Depending on the dose a child receives, they may experience weight loss, loss of appetite, sleepless nights and nervousness. Irritability is also a common side effect, as well as the threat of increased activity once the medication begins to wear off.

More noticeable physical reactions to Attention Deficit Disorder medication include jerking muscles and facial twitches. Some doctors will lower medication doses to combat these reactions. Below, you will find a brief mention on some of the side effects associated with two of the most common Attention Deficit Disorder prescription drugs:

Ritalin

This particular Attention Deficit Disorder drug has been known to stimulate the central nervous system and provide a wide range of positive effects on ADD patients. The drug offers a calming effect, as well as helps children to focus. Positive results are also seen in patient’s self-esteem and relationship building skills. Short-term side effects for Ritalin include nausea, insomnia, nervousness and changes in heart rate. Skin rashes and itching may develop, as well as stomach pains and weight loss.

Long-term side effects include fevers, headaches, loss of appetite, irregular heartbeat and possible hallucinations. There has also been evidence to suggest that Ritalin may cause a slight decrease in a child’s growth rate, but nothing that permanently hinders progress.

Strattera

Like Ritalin, taking the drug, Strattera, may cause an array of varied side effects, ranging from rare liver problems to flu-like symptoms. If you should see your child develop a yellowing of the skin (also called jaundice) or release dark-colored urine, you should make a call to the doctor right away. In 2005, a public health alert emerged as doctors warned parents of the possible development of suicidal tendencies in children and adolescents taking Strattera.

Common side effects felt by children taking Strattera included nausea and fatigue. Usually taking the drug with food helps to lessen nausea, while finding the right time to take Strattera eases tiredness.
