Why Accurate Diagnosis for Attention Deficit Disorder is Vital

When a child exhibits trouble focusing, seems inattentive, moves about too much or gives into impulses, one of the first things a parent fears is Attention Deficit Disorder. In the past, the condition was not frequently thought of. Sometimes children were thought to be forward thinkers, highly intelligent or unruly when they could not pay attention or sit still.

With symptoms stemming from the age of seven, an accurate Attention Deficit Disorder diagnosis is vital to the health and development of a child. This is because, all too often, children across the United States are instantly medicated for the condition. Despite the natural tendency for young males to act on impulse, have extra energy and become easily distracted, ADD diagnosis has become an increasingly common diagnosis among elementary-aged boys.

Despite the television and video game trends of today, Attention Deficit Disorder is still one of the first assumptions for children displaying inattentiveness, boredom or lack of focus. There are also plenty of other reasons that a child will showcase symptoms for ADD. It is important to get to the root of the problem regarding childhood inattentiveness because the symptoms might be masking a deeper issue.

Children tend to act out social, mental and emotional problems without voicing the source of their unhappiness. Unfortunately, children suffering from child abuse or neglect often act in the same ways as an Attention Deficit Disorder patient. For some kids, an ADD diagnosis is made and medication prescribed, but the real source of their issues is never solved and the abuse continues.

The symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder are also similar to a variety of serious problems that can affect children all the way through adulthood. Brain defects, depression, hyperthyroidism, fetal alcohol syndrome, anxiety and bipolar disorder are just some of the psychological problems that share the same signs and symptoms with ADD.

Children may also suffer from behavioral problems that are not caused by Attention Deficit Disorder. Accurate diagnosis is important in this case because a child could be treated for something they don’t even suffer from, while ignoring the true cause. To make matters worse, easily preventable or treatable conditions are often at fault for these symptoms, such as allergies, nutritional deficiencies and even consuming too many foods and drinks with caffeine.

Depending on where you live or who you are, Attention Deficit Disorder is both under- and over-diagnosed. While some parts of the United States showcase a high percentage of ADD patients, other communities do not. A variety of gender, geographic and racial partiality hinder accurate diagnosis for Attention Deficit Disorder. For example, in poor or rural communities, medical attention to ADD is often ignored due to lack of insurance coverage.

Diagnosing ADD in Children

There are many different factors that a medical professional will take a look at when it comes to diagnosing a child. The first thing they will most likely analyze is the complete medical and school records. Family histories are also important in coming to a conclusion. A medical exam will also reveal further information that is helpful for diagnosis.

An accurate diagnosis of ADD may fall upon the shoulders of several different parties, including parents, teachers and doctors. Diagnosis is a delicate issue that, when not handled with care, could lead to unnecessary medication. Worse yet, prescription meds have been known to bring about a series of avoidable side effects that make matters much worse for a child.
